Delaware Memorial Bridge Lane Closures Start Labor Day 2026: What Drivers Need to Know
Traveling through Delaware over Labor Day weekend or making Thanksgiving plans? A major construction project on the Delaware Memorial Bridge could affect your trip.
Beginning Monday, September 7, 2026 — Labor Day, the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) is scheduled to begin a major joint replacement project on the New Jersey-bound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
Construction is expected to continue through Tuesday, November 24, 2026, just two days before Thanksgiving.
What Drivers Can Expect
The two right lanes of the New Jersey-bound span will be closed continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while the two left lanes remain open.
Crews are scheduled to replace 46 bridge joints — 24 expansion joints and 22 relief joints — along with specialized Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) reconstruction around the joint locations.
To provide additional northbound capacity, a barrier-separated bypass lane will operate on the Delaware-bound span for eligible passenger vehicles traveling toward the New Jersey Turnpike or U.S. Route 40.
Trucks, buses, oversized vehicles and other commercial traffic will not be permitted to use the bypass.
IMPORTANT: Visiting Delaware for Labor Day Weekend?
The project begins on Labor Day itself, when many visitors will be leaving Delaware after spending the holiday weekend with family and friends, at the Delaware beaches or enjoying a getaway.
Travelers returning to New Jersey, New York and other Northeast destinations could encounter the new traffic pattern on their way home.
Traffic from Delaware’s beach communities won’t be the only factor. Motorists traveling north through the I-95 corridor and connecting with I-295 toward the Delaware Memorial Bridge will also converge on the crossing.
If family or friends are visiting you from out of state, make sure they know about the bridge construction before they head home.
Thanksgiving Travel
The project is scheduled to continue through Tuesday, November 24, while Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26.
Travelers heading out during the weekend before Thanksgiving or on Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week could still encounter the construction traffic pattern.
If the project remains on schedule, the restrictions are scheduled to be removed before Thanksgiving Day. Travelers using the bridge around the holiday should check the latest bridge status as their travel date approaches.

If your schedule is flexible, consider leaving around 2:00 or 3:00 AM. Traveling during off-peak hours may help you avoid some of the heavier holiday traffic.
And watch your speed. Work-zone traffic violations can carry increased penalties. Delaware law provides for at least double the normal fine for specified violations in marked construction areas, while New Jersey doubles fines for motor-vehicle violations in road construction zones.
